SEND Unit
Greenfield Academy has a funded 36- place SEND Unit within school, which is a specialist provision designed to meet the needs of a small, carefully selected group of children with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) whose needs cannot be fully met through mainstream provision alone.
Our Starburst, Sunshine and Moonbeam classes provide a highly personalised, structured and nurturing learning environment, while ensuring pupils remain part of the wider academy community wherever appropriate. The provision is tailored to support children to make progress academically, socially and emotionally, and to develop independence and confidence.

Have an EHCP
Require a specialist approach to teaching and learning
Have needs that align with the specific focus of the SEND Unit
At Greenfield Academy, our SEND Unit supports a variety of primary areas of need including:
Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
Many pupils will have co‑occurring needs, and support is planned holistically in line with each child’s EHCP outcomes.
Curriculum and provision:
The curriculum and provision within our SEND classes are:
Highly personalised and based directly on the outcomes and provision detailed in the child’s EHCP
Planned and reviewed through the Assess–Plan–Do–Review cycle
Flexible and responsive to individual progress, strengths and needs
Support may include:
Smaller group or individualised teaching
Targeted interventions to support communication, social interaction, emotional regulation and learning
Specialist resources and adapted learning approaches
A strong focus on developing independence, social skills and readiness for learning
Where appropriate, pupils may access mainstream lessons, activities or social times, supported by adults, to promote inclusion and positive peer relationships.
Staffing:
Our SEND Unit is staffed by:
Teachers with experience and training in SEND
Skilled teaching assistants who understand the specialist needs of the pupils
Support from the academy SENDCo and, where required, external professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, SEMH specialists etc
Staff work closely with parents/carers and external agencies to ensure consistency and high‑quality support.
Admissions:
Placement within the SEND Unit is agreed through a formal consultation process with Tameside Local Authority. This ensures that:
The provision is suitable to meet the child’s EHCP needs
The academy has the appropriate resources, expertise and capacity to support the pupil effectively
Admissions decisions are not made by the academy alone and form part of the statutory EHCP process.
